TRANSACTION AT A MART.
CHARGE OF FORGERY PROVED. Hearing of the charge against William Snelling (Mr. A. Moody), of forgery by altering a receipted invoice,' thereby obtaining £3 from Messrs. Turners and Growers by false pretences, and of attempting to obtain four cases of apples wa s concluded yesterday. For the defence counsel said the case was a complicated one rendered more so by the system of checking out fruit, and of book-keeping followed at the auction room. The receipts upon which tho evidence turned had admittedly been in the hands of several people for a considerable time. He submitted that accused had given a straightforward story of the happenings concerning the fruit, and that the evidence for the prosecution supported it. Accused then went into the box and gave his version of the happenings. He said that he had bought two lots of apples that morning and that one receipted invoice had disappeared. ! After little more than a quarter of an hour's retirement, the jury returned a verdict of guilty on all counts. Sentence was deferred,
