BURDEN OF TAXATION.
WELLINGTON GAS COMPANY.
A STRIKING COMPARISON.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—rRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday.
Mention was made of the heavy taxation paid by the Wellington Gas Company at the annual meeting to-day. The -assessment had been increased during tho year by Is 3d in the £. Comparing the periods 1913 to 1915, and 1920 to 1922 inclusive, the company paid £4702 in the earlier period, against £59,392 in the postwar period, an increase of no less than £54,690. The chairman, Dr. Prendergast Knight, said this brought into striking relief the extraordinary injustice of penalising commercial undertakings by the imposition of excessive taxation, while permitting municipal competitors to escape scot-free. This would always prevent gas from being supplied to tho public as cheaply as desired. Tho company paid a dividend of 8 per cent., and carried forward £11,828.
