ANDERSON BEATS HUNTER.

SEMI-FINAL REACHED.

A snd N.Z. NEW YORK, Sept. IS. In the fifth round of the national tennis singles championship of the United States, J. O. Anderson (Australia) defeated W. Hunter (United States), 6— 6—3, 6—4. The correspondent of the New York Times states that the defeat of the Australians by the Japanese in the "Davis Cup contest has been negatived by Anderson's remarkable playing in the singles championship. Subjected to the hardest gruelling in the tennis world, he has come through with flying colours, advancing into the semi-finals. Hunter was a semi-finalist in the British championship at Wimbledon last June, playing B. I. "C. Norton five close sets, yet Anderson's victory was easy. He overwhelmed Hunter with his forehand drives, taking the first four games, the sixth and seventh in the first set. Hunter's service control deserted him, and he made three double faults in the last game. Anderson broke through Hunter's setvice in the second set to a lead of four games to two, and by sizzling shots won two of the next three games. In the third set Hunter's resistance increased, and each player won on his own service until the games stood four all. Anderson increased his attack, and by sheer speed won the next two games. Tilden eliminated Lowe (British Isles) easily, 6—4, 6—3, 6—4. Tilden tomorrow meets Willis Davis, and Anderson will play Wallace Johnson, who has a remarkable cut stroke, and is a hard man to overcome. Johnson defeated Washburn early in the tournament. The winners of the two matches will meet on Saturday in the final match.
