Taranaki. wa s played this afternoon before over 2000 spectators, and resulted m a wm for Taranaki by 9 points (two tries unconverted and a penalty goal) to 6 points ia penalty goal and_ an unconverted try). Play in the first half was interesting, being at times fast and open, with the advantage to Taranaki. On changing ends the visitors made the game open and assumed the aggressive, maintaining the advantage almost wholly throughout, but the Taranaki defence was too solid. UNDER LEAGUE RULES. THE NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. The council of the New Zealand Rugby League met last evening. Mr. P. W. McLean presided. The Wellington 1 ! informed the council that T. Balks would j replace Jessop as fullback ,n the WellingI ton team which is to play Auckland on Saturday. Mr. Murray was appointed referee for the match. Mr. E. Phelan. ru.nager of the New Zealand team that visited Hamilton on Wednesday, reported that there had been a remarkable advancement in the game in the South Auckland district. There were 12 senior teams, and the League game was supported by some of tho most prominent citizens. The prospect* were very bright, and the display of foolball _ on Wednesday would have reflected credit on ai-y teams in New Zealand. There were between 5000 and 4000 spectators present, and general approval was expressed with tho game. The council decided to uphold tho protest entered by Marist Brothers against Maritime, on the ground that full time had not been played in tho match between these two teams on Saturday, July 16.
