Fairly general opinion among merchants is that there is no fear of a shortage of refined sugar developing within the next month or two, because of the prospective closing down of the refining works at Chelsea.

There has been no shortage of refined sugar in the real sense for two or three months past. Indeed, in consequence of the expectation that the price will drop when the new contract between the Government and the Colonial Sugar Company is announced, the demand for- sugar has been extremely poor, and the Government has sought to stimulate the deaiand.
