CONDUCT OF RACING.

DUNEDIN CLUB'S POLICY.

ACCOMMODATION FOR PUBLIC [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] DUNEDIN. Wednesday.

Mr. L. C. Hazlett, vice-president'of the Dunedin Jockey Club, in the course of some remarks on the Racing Commission's report, said the commission mentioned Ellerslie as an example of what a racing dub could or should do in the interests of the public. That was quite right. The praise was well earned. " The Auckland Racing ~Club," he continued, " deserves credit for its work in gardening and so on, but the naming of one club only is rather unfair. Numbers of other clubs have done the same thing. Our own club, the Dunedin Jockey Club, has planned for picturesqueness and accommodation, and has done a great deal in that way with what is relatively a new course. I observe that the commission stressed the duty of providing better accommodation for the public To that I say 'Hear, hear.' The man who can only afford to pay a shilling or two for his racing has as good a right as anyone else to consideration, and a view pf what goes on. " My opinion is that except in. a very few cases, it would be impracticable for the clubs to run the totalisatcr as the

commission suggests. The initial cost is one difficulty. A greater difficulty is as to getting the services of an expe.rienced and trusty staff capable of working at speed. Men fit to do this work are not picked up at street corners, nor got by inserting a ' wanted * advertisement. "My personal idea is that when this report goes to Parliament, the proposal to increase the number of totalisator permits ■will be negatived. Parliament will probably say racing is doing all right to stay as it is. It is a debatable question whether mora permits are required. If more are allowed, I think the allocation proposed is fair."
