THE SPRINGBOKS' TOUR.
CHRISTCHURCH WELCOME.
TRIBUTE TO "TONY" WILDING [BT TELEGRAPH. —rHESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. A civic reception was given to the Springboks in Christchurch to-day. Local sports bodies were fully represented. The Mayor, Dr. Thacker, M.P., in a speech of welcome, said the reception was not an ordinary one, the visitors linking up the golden chains of Empire. A graceful tribute to the late Mr. Anthony Wilding was paid by Mr. Pienaar, who, addressing Mr. F. S. Wilding, said: " The name of your son is regarded with very great veneration in South Africa. He is looked upon as one of the finest sports that ever played." THE WELLINGTON MATCH. ATTENDANCE OVER-STATED. [BY TELEGBAPH —PEESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Monday. The early estimates of the attendance at the football match on Saturday between the South Africans and Wellington, struck anyone who knows the ground as exaggerated. It would be impossible to get 30.000 people into it. It is improbable there were even 25,000 present. The official count has already been found to have been much over-stated, one turnstile having recorded 3000 too many. The total takings of £2500 do not account, for anythin c like the official return.
