COOKS AND STEWARDS.
EIGHT-HOUR DAY WANTED. [BT TELEGRAPH.—'PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Thursday.
In the Arbitration Court to-day the Federated Cooks and Stewards' Union asked for the wages granted in the new Australian award. In regard to hours of work when at sea, it was asked that they should not exceed eight in any one day, and that they should be worked between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. At present the hours of work are 10 per day. the workers concerned being the only ones in New Zealand who have not as yet enjoyed the eight-hour day. It was stated in Court that the present depression had seriously affected the shipping companies. On their behalf, it was urged that wages should be reduced instead of increased.
