A BLUEJACKET'S DEATH.
FALL FROM FERRY STEAMER.
ACCIDENTAL OCCURRENCE.
An inquest was held by the coroner, Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., yesterday into the
circumstances surrounding the death of William Eaton, a joiner on H.M.S. Philomel, who died on Tuesday night, as the result of injuries received through falling overboard from the ferry steamer Kestrel. Mr. Endean watched proceedings on behalf of the Devonport Steam Ferry Company, Ltd. Deceased had been seen standing on the deck of the ferry steamer leaning over the rail. When the vessel was nearing the wharf, he fell overboard. There was no evidence to show how he fell, but he struck his head on the rubbing strake before reaching the water. A lifeboat was quickly lowered from the steamer and deceased was rescued unconscious. He was removed to the Philomel suffering from a severe scalp wound, and died at a late hour that night. Evidence was given by Surgeon-Com-mander R. L. Jones of the Philomel, that the cause of death was injury to the brain and shock, caused by immersion, A verdict was returned in accordance with the medical testimony.
