SUPPLIES OF TIMBER.
KAURI AND RIMU SCARCE.
IMPORTATIONS OF OREGON.
GREAT INCREASE THIS YEAR.
The supply of kauri and rimu timber in Auckland at present is limited, and there is little prospect of kauri becoming more plentiful.
Referring to this matter yesterday, the chairman of the Board of Trade, Mr. W. G. McDonald, said the board limited the quantity of rimu and other timber that could be exported from the Dominion, the object being to ensure a sufficient supply for local requirements. While it was reported that there was a shortage of building timber in Auckland, the- market in other centres had eased. He said that a great deal of Oregon timber had been coming into the country since last year, when 2,800,000 ft. were imported. Up to April 1 last some 6,250,000 ft. had been landed in New Zealand.
Asked if the Government proposed increasing the duty on imported timber, Mr. McDonald said he could not answer the question, as it was a matter coming within, the scope of the Tariff Commission, which had yet to present its report to the G overnor-G eneral.
