SYDNEY MURDER TRIALS
CONSTABLE SHOT IN PARK.
SPEECHLEY FOUND GUILTY. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 1.30 a-m.) SYDNEY. April 12. On a charge of murdering Constable Wolgast in the Centennial Park on February 8, Charles Speechley was found guilty to-day, and sentenced to death. The murder of Constable Wolgast followed a bag-snatching episode in a Sydney park. After snatching a lady's bag the thief ran away, and when Constable Wolgast attempted, to stop him he fired at point blank range, the constable falling dead. A day or two later Speechley was charged with the crime, and was identified as one of a gang of park prowlers who had been seen in the vicinity of the murder that day. A revolver of the calibre used in the murder was in his possession. Sensational evidence concerning the operations of gangs of park prowlers was given during the preliminary trial.
