STRUCK BY LIGHTNING.
CHIMNEY AT GREY LYNN.
TWO FORTUNATE ESCAPES.
The chimney of a house in Wilton Street, Grey Lynn, was struck by lightning during the thunderstorm that passed over a portion of the city shortly after eleven o'clock yesterday morning. The house struck was No. 8, Wilton Street, occupied by Mr Robert Gilmour, a carpenter, who. was absent from home at the time. • Mrs. Gilmour had just stepped outside as the lightning struck, while her son was also outside. Though shattered bricks were thrown about with considerable violence, both fortunately escaped injury. The top of the chimney was badly shattered, bricks and fragments of brick being thrown all over the roof of the house. The crash of the lightning-stroke and the fall of the chimney was heard over a considerable portion of the neighbourhood. The thunder that accompanied the electric storm was unusually loud, being heard all over the city and suburbs. No rain fell in the city daring the storm, though appearances pointed to a heavy downpour on the Waitakere Ranges.
