The Union Steam Ship Company announces that the Maheno, which has been held up by the stewards' strike for a week, is to sail on Friday. (Reed. 1.5 a.m.) MELBOURNE. Dec 22. The marine stewards have approached the shipowners with a view to effecting a settlement of the strike. Details have not yet been announced, but it is stated that the owners will insist that the men return to the ships before negotiations begin. An early settlement is not expected. The dispute between the Federated Seamen's Union and the Tasmanian shipowners has not been settled, the latter deciding that the Arbitration Board must determine the issue. Sydney seamen threaten to complicate matters further if the Tasmanian dispute is not settled. As a result of the shipping dislocation, inter-State traffic is diverted overland, compelling the railway authorities to provide extra trains.
