TRAMWAY FINANCE.
Sir, —The City Council made & tremendous blunder when it conceded double pay for Sunday work to tramwaymen, on the top. of a six-day ■week. The eix-dtty week on pub'ic services only requires a man ta be on Sunday duty about once in seven weeks, and for every Sunday on duty he receives a week day of rest. This has hitherto been considered a fair and equitable arrangement where necessary work has to be; performed on Sundays. The Auckland City Council is in the unenviable position of having initiated wnew departure, whereby tramwaymen, in addition to receiving a day off in lieu of a Sunday's work, also receive double pay. ' The demand for double pay on Sundavs, in addition to the day off, wes mere bluff on the .part of the union, but, unfortunately for the public, our councillors allowed it to succeed. The council will have the public behind them if they will withdraw this concession when the agreement expires, and at the same time revert to the old system of uniform fares every day of the week. Protect the Public.
