HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER.
THE ARAPUNI SCHEME. INVESTIGATION BY EXPERTS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PUTAEUBU. Friday. In conference with the Putaruru District Development Board this week, Mr. F. F. Hockly, M.P. for Rotorua, stated in reply to questions that the board of experts which had to decide as to the feasibility of the Arapuni hydro-electrical scheme had already sat four or five times. It was thoroughly investigating the geological and' engineering aspects of the scheme and this, of course, took some little time. The Minister for Public Works, the H<m. J. G. Coates, was anxious to get the board's report as soon as possible, and if it was favourable he could be relied on to prosecute, the scheme with the utmost vigour, as he realised the importance of hydro-electric power to the country. In fact both the Prime Minister and Mr. Coates regarded it as thai only satisfactoy solution of the coal problem. In the event Of the Arapuni scheme being rejected by the experts, the Aratiatia scheme, "between'PutaruruS: and Taupo, would' be prosecuted as vigorously as possible.
