APPLICATION FOR BONUS.
COOKS AND STEWARDS.
COMPANY OPPOSES PAYMENT.
OTEIiINGTON. Wednesday.
An application by the Federated Cooks and Stewards for a bonus of £2 a month was heard in the Arbitration Court today. , -
Mr. Smith (on behalf of the Union Company) said the case was a test case. Whatever bonus was granted would have to be paid to other seagoing unions, involving £86,472 per annum. As far as the Union Company was concerned, if the bonus were granted, an increase of fares was inevitable. He asked the Court to refuse the bonus altogether. The industry was a special one, and it'-was-never intended that the bonus should apply. The majority of the men were single. Mr. Kennedy (on behalf of the Federation) said that, despite the increases granted to stewards, their earnings worked out at Is Id per hour only, -while the galley staff earned lOd an hour. • The Court reserved its- decision.
