ROADING AT DEVONPORT.
LOAN PROPOSAL CARRIED.

The Devonpdrt Borough Council's proposal \to borrow £120,000 for road' improvement purposes .was approved by the ratepayers at a poll held yesterday The issue had been submitted, in conjunction with other proposals, at a poll held about two months ago, when it was rejected by a majority of 42. Since the previous poll, however, a Good Roads Campaign Committee has been established, and active propaganda work has been carried out with, a view- of reversing the decision. The voting at yesterday's poll was as follows
For the proposal ... ... 747 Against ... ... ; ... ..." 383 Majority for ... ... 364 I"'' • ■ The proposal was supported by- a large majority of the voters at each of the seven polling places, with the exception of that at Stanley Bay. Altogether 1136 votes were recorded, the number of ratepayers being 2796. The votes recorded at the previous poll totalled 1003. Speaking subsequent, to the ' announcement of the polling the i Mayor, Mr. H. S." W. King, stated that the support given to, the council's proposal would put fresh heart into those who were serving at the council table, and would enable the people of Devonport to look forward to the time when the one thing lacking in the borough would be supplied. They would have roads that they would no longer need to feel ashamed of. The good work done by the Campaign Committee had met with a welldeserved reward, and much praise was due to those public-spirited burgesses who gave both time and money to the work of organisation. He was glad'to be able if congratulate them on the success of their efforts and to thank them for their assistance.
