CITY'S COAL SUPPLY.
TRAMS AND ELECTRICITY. STOCKS NEARLY EXHAUSTED. POSITION AT THE HOSPITAL.
Thfc position in regard to the coal sup. plies for tho tramways was explained yesterday by "the general manager, Mr. J. J. Walklato. He stated that there" was sufficient fuel in hand to enable the services to bo maintained through the weekend, but after that the situation was doubtful,' depending on the strike issue. A quantity of coal sufficient to allow of the carrying on of the tram services for another brief period was, said Mr. Walklate, on tie railway, and would become available when the strike ended arjd delivery could he obtained. At the city electrical power station the tuition is as it was two days ago. The coaVon hand is inconsiderable, but there is enough to keep the supply 01 current for lightingand power going over the Week-end, The question of further stocks of coal is one that had to remain unsettled sesterday. , Referring to the quest-on of coal supplies for the Auckland. Hospital yesterday On chairman of the, Auckland Hospital Board, Mr. W. Wallace, ssid the rock of coal on hand rarely exceeded three days supply, Though supplies hod not yet been discontinued, he wat, in consultation with the boards engineer, Mr. A. J. Walker, with a view to running motor-wmes from Huntly, if necessary, to maintain an adequate'supply of coal from the mines for hospital-requirements. He also had in contemplation the installation of a dynamo for the purpose of ensuring temporary lighting for the institution. > Mr. Wallace added that he had the assurance of the chairman #of the board of directors ©? the Taupiri Coal Mines, limited, that the hospital would have first call upon the coal output from that company's minis, as long as coal was available. ,
