ESCAPE FROM CUSTODY.
PRISONER ON BREAD AND WATER.
The escape of an habitual criminal named William Brewer from Mount Eden Uaol on April 16 was the subject of an inquiry by Mr. J- W. Poynton, S.M., at the gaol yesterday. Evidence was given by Chief Warder Ucid and Warders Robertson and Bell that Brewer was working with a squad of men near Mountain Road, when, about 1.30 p.m., he was seen escaping through & hole in a wail. About five hours later a constable discovered him in Ait-ken's Bash, near the Grammar School.
Brewer requested io be tried by jury, ;<nd on being informed that that was impossible, declared that the magistrate was liable to a fine of £500 for refusing to five a prisoner the benefit of the Harbeas Corps Act. The prisoner proceeded to criticise the Cuief Justice, Sir Robert Stout, but the magistrate said he could not allow the colour question or sectarian matters to be introduced. Had prisoner complied with hi* licence. by leaving Auckland in September last, instead of remaining in the district, he would not have been back in ganl. Prisoner admitted a criminal record d-iiing from 1904, whi-.-h included convicions for stealing and eight charges of f-ilse pretences.
Punishment, of 14 days on bread and water diet was imposed.
