SPREAD OF INFLUENZA.

YESTERDAY'S CASES TOTAL 140.

SCHOOLS TO BE CLOSED.

PRECAUTIONARY, MEASURE.

MILD CASES AMONG PUPILS As a result of the increase in the number of cases of influenza during the last few days, the Auckland Education Board, acting on the advice of the District Health Department, has decided to close the primary schools in the district as from to-day. They will remain closed until May 10, unless an improvement in the position justifies their reopening earlier. The schools in the' North Auckland Health District have already been closed until May 3. In consequence of the closing of the schools, the school children's visit to the Renown, arranged for to-morrow morning, will cot take place. A great many of the primary school children have been affected, but the district health officer stated yesterday that practically all cases were mild in form. At the same time it was imperative that all the usual precautions should be taken to prevent the spread or the increase in severity of the disease. The Auckland Grammar Schools Board has received permission from the district health officer for the three schools to remain open for the preseut. At the first appearance of influenza the schools will be closed. The health officer advised that the visit of pupils to the Renown, which was arranged for to-morrow, should not take place, and the visit has been cancelled. King's College will close to-morrow owing' to the absence of so many pupils who are suffering from influenza. j

ALL BUT SIX OF MILD TYPE. The cases of influenza notified yesterday to the district health officer numbered 140, including six severe cases from the city.
