, « 3 GENERAL RUSSELL'S VIEWS. I A national memorial to commemorate ' New Zealand's part in the -war was sug- v gested by General Sir A. Russell', when 1 speaking at a civic reception tendered him r at Wanganui. He said that in addition ( to individual memorials, there should be one which was truly a national one, which £ would commemorate the spirit with which * New Zealand carried out its part in the c war, and the sacrifices made by the nation I x both on ihe field of battle and at home Such a memorial, which might be erected, £ say, at Wellington, would be a source of * inspiration to the future generations, and would urge them to emulate the same spirit of self-sacrifice.
