SWIMMING.

WAITEMATA-EDEN CARNIVAL.

The holiday season this year is not to be allowed to pass without some efiort to provide competition for swimmers, as a combined Waitemata-Mount Eden Clubs' carnival will be held at the Shelly Beach Baths on Christmas Day at 2.30 p.m. From a numerical standpoint this will probably be the best dub carnival of the season, and from a spectacular point of view it should also compare favourably with other club functions.

The 100 yds championship of Auckland is set down for decision, and though, as is usual in championship events, the number of competitors is limited, their quality more than compensates for this. In L. Kronfeld, J. Enwright, and C. Welson Auckland possesses a trio of sprinters up to New Zealand championship form, so that a provincial championship in which all three are engaged is vested with more than usual interest. After Kronfeld's convincing Win in the 220 yds championship, his chances of suecess are mostly favoured. Enwright cannot be held cheaply, although he has not figured in competition as much as one would wish. The long stretch of the Shelly Beach Baths should assist a strong swimmer like Welson, so that, with one or two of the minor lights compering, the race should be worth witnessing. In the 440 yds Kronfeld and Welson will again try conclusions. This will he Kronfeld's first test over the middle distance. Of Welson's capability over a quarter-mile course there is no doubt, so that a true criterion of the local form should be possible.

In the ladies' events Mies V. Walrond, the Dominion schoolgirls' champion, will compete against other prominent swimmers. Events for novice swimmers, diving, and comic interludes complete a" programme that should provide an enjoyable afternoon. Entries close at the Tepid Baths at 9 p.m. on Monday.
