CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
CONGESTION OF CARGOES.' The council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce met yesterday, Mr/ M. M. McCallum presiding. Delay in shipment of cargo from Auckland was the subject of a letter from Mr. Thos. Henderson. Mr. McCallum ■ said something - would have to be done, as the congestion was terrible. He declared that the' Harbour Board wanted to do as little as possible for' the money it charged, whereas :.the Wellington Board followed a reverse policy. The Importers' Committee was instructed to make inquiries and to make representations to the Harbour Board. It was decided thai the chamber revert to the previous arrangement with the University College Council "to - give one scholarship of £10, instead of £2(> a year, the present amount. .1 ■'.<<, I Consideration was given to a memoran- ; dum from >.he chief librarian :>f 'Asset. i land Public Library, forwarded by the ■ town cfa/k, in which it -»<--~s suggested that a, cunmercial .'fiction should be established in the ' Public Library; ' and that the existing collection .in ..the library of the chamber be transferred there. The council decided to reply that it had all facilities for dealing with its members, and / saw no advantage; in making such a change; inquiries _at the Public library for books, such- as tie chamber possessed, might be referred, to the chamber." ~ .... . A letter from the Onehunga ,Waterside Workers' Union, explaining their attitude in refusing to handle sugar at the end of November, was "received.'l Mr. M, M. Louisson said there would have been- -no sugar shortage in the country if the waterside workers had not refused to unload 2000 tons, "which had to be sent ,to Sydney.
