TEACHERS' SALARIES.
ALTERED REGULATIONS. RECOGNITION OF MERIT. CONCESSIONS IN COUNTRY, i New regulations relating to the salaries of school teachers have lately been gazetted, and the effect of some new features were explained yesterday to the Auckland Education Board by its secretary, Mr. E. C. Purdie. For the first time, said Mr. Purdie, the regulations recognised 1 the principle of payment according to position on the graded list. The whole of the increments to certificated teachers were determined by their position on that list. This indicated the intention of introducing into the new ; Act the principle of paying teachers not according to average attendance, but according to merit as teachers- Another ' new feature was that increased payment should be made in respect of teachers in i rural area schools, to encourage teachers to take up positions in country districts. Every married teacher in a »ural area, I whether headmaster or assistant, had his I or her allowance definitely increased from ! £20 to £30 up to schools of Grade 3. A , concession was also being made to teachers who had served with the forces. The reduction of 10 per cent, from uncertificated teachers and 5 per cent, from licensed teachers had been abrogated, and for the future all uncertificated teachers would receive the scale salaries. As against that, however, they would not get what was called the grading increment, an amount varying from £50 to £10. The Hon. G. J. Garland expressed himself delighted at the change to recognition of teaching merit. It was decided that the regulations should be discussed at the board's next. meeting.
