STATE LAND PURCHASE.

THE UREWERA COUNTRY. NEARLY 300,000 ACRES BOUGHT. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TAURANGA. Wednesday. During his visit to Tauranga the Hon. W. H. Hemes, Minister for Native Affairs, was interviewed in regard to the position of Crown purchases of native blocks in the Urewera country. Up to September 13, 1919, he said, a total area of 297,772 acres had been acquired by the Crown, and negotiations were in progress for the acquisition of a further 211,947 acres. Mr. Herries stated that as soon as the native land purchase officer reports that he can purchase no further interests in the blocks application will be immediately made to the Native Land Court to have the interests purchased by the Crown cut off from those of non-sellers. The Crown interests will then be declared Crown land, and will thereupon come under the ad-nvnist-ation of the Lands Department fox cutting-up and settlement purposes.
