TRAMWAY OFFICERS' DISPUTE i "'" • ' : '; a' ' ■ . ,l ~"-£V > ( ,'' SCALE OF WAGES FIXED. 3 , The award of the Arbitration Court »' , the dispute between the Auckland City Tramways Officer?' Union and the Ancle- ' land Electric Tramways Company, Ltd: has been filed by the clerk of awards! ! A memorandum attached to the award ■ states that the principal questions tub- ; mitted to the Court were:—(l) Whether ■ the salaried staff should be brought under , th provisions of the award, and (2) as to, [ the wages to be paid to the various per. ' sons covered by the award. The Court wan of the opinion that the salaried officers could net properly be brought under the provisions of an industrial award, and they, therefore, had been omitted from the present award. The Court was unable—as requested by the union—except as to engineer and truck shops, to classify the leading hands in the | workshops as foremen, and consequently they did not come within the scope of the award. The Court was, however of the opinion that these men, occupying as they did positions of responsibility, should be paid at a substantially higher rate than the award rate for journeymen in their respective industries. The weekly wages fixed by the Court arei—Traffic department: Chief traffic inspector, £4 10s; depot officero, £4 lfo . motor inspectors, first year £4, second year £4 5s j despatches and traffic inspectors, first year £3 12s 6d, second year £3 17s 6d. AUCKLAND BUTCHERY TRADE. CONDITIONS AND WAGES. »> The award of the Court in the dispute between tie Auckland Butchers. Meat Preservers, and Bacon Cures' Union and the employers, affecting the butchers and pork butchers, has also been filed with the clerk of awards. The principal questions submitted to the Court mm a* to the definition of skilled workmen, stable time for be;? carters, wages; and preference. A memorandum attached to the award states that the • object of : defining the dutie- of a skilkd worker was for the purpose of relieving such worker from the performance of ■. certain work hitherto considered as being within their sphere, and thus enabling employers to employ unskilled workera for such work. This was an unusual application to come from a union, which generally, was strongly oppose J. * 0 the introduction of unskilled labour. No attempt had been made in any previous 'dispute, in this industry to-make a classification of the workers employed . therein, and the evidence ■>submitted satisfied the Court thai in the present condition of the trade it was quite impracticable to formulate a> definition of general application. With regard to stable .time for beef carters, the Co-irt was of opinion that 'these workers were entitled to have their conditions improved, and they : :' had therefore been placed on tho eame,:footing, 'with regard to stable . attendance, as other carters covered by the award.: As the Court had thus reduced their hours of labour during week days, and had also given them a substantial increase in wages, the existing practice with regard to attendance on hones on •Siihdaya > arid holidays by .these workers had been ;• allowed to' continue. WitJl regard to wages, the Court had fixed these at the same rates as those agreed on . recently; between, "U. the employers and • workers in fir industry in Ghristchurch and Dunedin. fj The award provides far a nine-hour d&v on; fill days except Saturdays, when nine?

and a-fcalf may be worked, although not • mow than; five hours may, be worked or i the weekly half-holiday. v Employers \engaged solely in'-pork 'butchery may employ • thou." : shop assistants 11 hours en Satur- ' days, but the hours of work for factory ; hands employed by suoh, employers shall not exceed 48 a week. The hours for beef cartersi.'must not exceed ' nine 'hours' for 1 five days, and :< five hours on the half ; holiday. - \ Wages! ares First shopman, or man in charge of >, shop,;' £3 - 15s ; a week; second shopman, _ £3 . ss; j first '<; small-goods man, £3 15s; all;-other; workers employed in connection, with the business, including shopmen,-'-■' small-goods' men, carters Fin charge-of-hawking or order ' carts, and general hands, £3; '.'drivers driving one hows, £2 18s; drivers driving two horses, £3 is. A bonus of 10; per cent, is allowed in addition to : these -'wages.' "The Court reserved the I power to review and readjust the wages and conditions of carters covered by this award after the making of any new award dealing with drivers generally; The.minimum wage filed for casual hands: (adults) was 12s for ordinary j days and 14s for 'Saturdays, the employment f of bws;a«c?euals hands not being allowed. Provision is made for the employment '' of boys.at wages'ranging from 17s 6d to £2 a week, according to age.; Nothing in the award, with the exception of the provi- ™; as; to hours' of work, apply to the employment of females as-shoe assistants in the shops of pork butchers.
