BUTCHERS' APPRENTICES.
ARBITRATION COURT DECISION,
A scheme for the training of boys in the butchering trade is contained in the award of the Arbitration Court in the'butchers' dispute, which has just been filed. During the hearing the union asked for the inclusion/of an apprenticeship clause, but the employers" objected,' saving that they had ; such c difficulty; in inducing boys to enter the trade that they felt that any attempt at apprenticeship would'drive the boys away. i: The award now filed provides the . following , wages for —Under 16, 17s 6d a week; 16 to 17, #1 2a 6d; 17 to 18,;£1756d! 18 to 19s. £1 12b 6d; 19 to 20, £1 ; 15s; 20 to 21,' £2. The proportion of boys is fixed at one to every three men portion of three men. Certain inducements r v also offered. ' It Is provided that any btoy !,wha: ■ '&ns \* nttended' "the course 'of instruction in butchery twhnique at the Auckland Technical College, and has passed the first year's examination on the subject shall receive 2s 6d a week in addition to, the ordinary rate. Similarly, boys who have paased the second year's examination shall, receive Es, ana the third fear's examination 7s 6d. It is stipulated that these additional payments shall only be made for one year following the passing of the examination, except in the case of the. third year's examination, in .which case boye shall. be entitled to receive tho additional payment until they reach tho age of ,21.v;,;; iwi '■:-•}'■' :;Z; :
