HANDLING OF MEAT.
NEED FOR/ REGULATION
When tho butchers' dispute was before the Arbitration Court some weeks ago/the Court was naked to insert a provision in the /award; making it • imperativo; on the employers to provide beef caifereZJ with suitable washable ■ overalls. It /was' stated at the hearing'that carters used sacks obtained from the stables to prevent the heavy quarters of t beef from, staining their clothes, and that while they' realised that isoma more sanitary covering was desirable. [the/men? : felt they could not go to the •expense of , providing • overalls .- thchlselves. Mr, Justice . Stringer then remarked that, if. the statements he had ! heard were not exaggerations, ; there /was need for more careful supervision - over ) the* handling ;of the meat supply. The award of the .Court in connection with 1 the dispute has now been filed, and a reference in the memorandum to the request for overalls states that the Court is of-.thu opinion that the handling of meat intended for human consumption ought to bo the subject of municipal ' regulation and could not be satisfactorily dealt with in an award.'
