Lord Pirrie, Director of Merchant Shipbuilding, in an interview, said that 240 separate shipbuilding and marine engineering establishments were under his department The better synchronising of hull and machinery construction had resulted in a marked, acceleration of the output, and there was now very rarely delay duo to waiting for machinery for standard ships, because it was interchangeable. Any immediate material in- 1 crease in the present rate of output could ! hardly be expected until additional skilled men were obtained. Fifty-sis small concrete ships were under construction. They were built in wooden moulds, into which steel rods were placed and concrete poured. The number of vessels salved after being badly damaged had recently Increased owing to improvements in the Admiralty's salvage organisation and devices to minimise danger.
