AUCKLAND ORPHANS' CLUB.

♦ The,popularity of the Auckland Orphans' Club was exemplified on Saturday evening, when, despite the inclement weather, there was almost a'record attendance. Mr. G. E. Read, vice-president, was in the chair. The American Oonsul-General, .Mr. A. A. Winj slow, and Captain A. Sexton, who recently returned from the front, after over three I years' service with the New Zealand forces, wore the principal guests. The hall was decorated with tho Union Jack and the Stars and Stripes. After the singing of tho National Anthem, tho orchestra ' played the "Stars and Stripes For Ever " as a compliment to Mr. Winslow. In acknowledging the chairman's welcome, Mr. Winslow referred to the very cordial relations now existing hotween Great Britain and America. Ho said the futuro would see the bonds of friendship between the two great nations moro firmly cemented together than ever. Ho thanked the people of New Zealand, especially the residents of Auckland, for many kindnesses, and he paid high praise to the Dominion's soldiers, to the Dominion itself, and to its great resources. Mr. Winslow also made interesting reference to what America was doing in the war. Captain Sexton gave a graphic description of phases of work at the front, especially bombing and patrol duties. The musical programme was veay enjoyable. Tho orchestra played some spirited selections. A recitation was given by Mr. H. M. Cardon, songs were sung by Ml*. Gilmore, Mr. R. Petersen, Mr., J. Peake, who is a member of the Napier Orphans' Club, and Mr. P. Brookes, an artist from Fuller's Opera House. The Lyric Four sang two part-songs, in excellent style, and some clever imitations, consisting of farmyard noises and sounds commonly heard in the street, were given by " Bellora," who is also from tho Opera House. The accompaniments were played . by Messrs. G. Shorland and H. Piper.
