RETIRING FROM THE SEA.

SERVICE OF 57 TEARS.

Captain C. Hopkins, master of the Waiotahi, retired from the sea yesterday in order to join the Northern Company's shore staff. Captain Hopkins, who is one of the oldest masters in the New Zealand coastal trade, was born in the Tower of London, in 1844, and at the age of two came to New Zealand with his father, the late Mr. C. Hopkins, who was a member of the .58th Regiment. He went to sea at the age of 17, serving on several coastal sailing vessels prior to joining the Northern steamship Company's service in 1887, and has been master of several of its steamers. In his younger days Captain Hopkins was a prominent oarsman. With Captain Parker and others he once pulled from Auckland to Mahurangi, a distance of 25 miles, and after winning a race, rowed back to Auckland. Captain Hopkins is the holder of the Royal Humane Society's medal for life-saving off Queen's Wharf, about thirty years ago.
