GERMANY FINDS STILL ANOTHER ENEMY.
DECLARATION OF WAR MADE BY SLAM.
SEIZURE OF 18,965 TONS OF SHIPPING.
EeUt "- (Received 11 p.m.) BANGKOK. July 23. biam has declared war on Germany, and has seized 18,965 tons of German shipping.
Siam is an independent kingdom of Further India. The reigning King is Chowfa Maha Vajiravudh. The area of the country is about 195,000 square miles and the population over 8,000,000. Over 3,000,000 are Siamese, over 2,000,000 Taos, and the remainder Chinese, Burmese, Indians, etc. The Siamese* are of medium height, well-formed, with olive complexions, darker than the Chinese but fairer than the Malays. In disposition the Siamese are mild-mannered! patient, submissive to authority, kindly and hospitable to strangers. Universal liability to military service is in force. The army is organised in ten divisions but the peace strength is only about 12,000 men; in addition to the marine infantry, about 15,000 strong, recruited from the maritime provinces. The navy comprises 21 vessels, all small and of no fighting value.
