The Federal revenue for the past year was £35,804,311, compared with £30,762,316 for the previous year. The expenditure was £35,127,727. Although the year closed with an apparent surplus of £1,676,584, the Commonwealth did not pay its way during 1916-17, as £3,000,000 was brought forward from the previous year. The actual expenditure was £1,323,416 more than the revenue. The total war services cost £58,732,881, against £41,201,946 the previous year. Of this,/'£8,014,661 was paid from revenue, £39,660,769 was raised in the Commonwealth, and £11,000,000 borrowed from Britain. Allowing for £20.233,115 .carried forward from the War Loans Fund in 1915-16, this leaves £20,175,664 available in 1917-18.
