GENERAL BRUSSILOFF AIMING AT LEMBERG.
RESUMPTION OF THE GEEAT CONCENTRIC MANOEUVRE
GERMANS ADMIT THE INITIAL SUCCESS.
Australian and N.Z. Cable. (Received 11.20 p.m.) PARIS, July 8. Major De Crepieve writes: The Russian demonstrations at Lutsk and Brody, and between the Strypa and Zlota Lipa Rivers all aim at Lemberg. General Biussiloff is prepared to resume the carrying out of his great concentric manoeuvre, which was interrupted by the advent of winter and the revolution."
LONDON, July 8. The newspapers give prominence to General Brussiloff's success in Galicia as a splendid commemoration, of the anniversary of the opening of the battle of the Somme. The news was first given to Petrograd by M. Kerensky, Minister for War, who telegraphed to the Premier, Prince Lvoff, stating that the Russian revolutionary army had commenced an offensive on July 1.
The Germans admit General Brussiloff's initial success at Koniuchy, but claim that their well-organised artillery in subsequent fighting took heavy toll. Their latest communique registers the development of fresh battles further north. Previous German reports prepared their own public for a general Russian attack, and also announced that lines focusing certain points of strategic importance were threatened. This movement will maintain large German forces in the eastern theatre who might otherwise have played an important part elsewhere. The revolution naturally weakened Russia's striking power, but the renewed bitter struggle on her front will doubtless harden the troops and emphasise the need of subordinating internal politics to military necessities.
