FIERCE STRUGGLES ON THE AISNE FRONT.

RENEWED GERMAN FAILURE AT SEVERAL POINTS. FOOTING NEAR CERNY PROVES TEMPORARY. 'Australian and N.Z. Cable. (Received 7 p.m.) LONDON, May 11. A French communique states: After a violent bombardment in the region of Cerny, north-east of Soissonsj the enemy made attacks on both sides of the village. These were shattered by our artillery end machine-guns. The enemy gained a footing in 200 yds of trenches west of the village, but was immediately driven out. Violent cannonading continues on this part of the front. Our batteries maintain a destructive fire against German organisations. We blew up a munitions depot north-east of Juvencourt. On the left bank of the MeUße, north of Verdun, the artillery duel was violent all night. Our detachments penetrated the German line north of Bezonvaux, and at Various points in Alsace, and took prisoners. We brought clown five enemy aeroplanes, and four others were seriously damaged. PARIS. May 11. An earlier French communique states: We carried a centre of resistance in the region of Chevreux, in the Rheims sector. German counter-attacks with grenades broke down under our fire. Wo | repulsed a stronger attack on our salient north-east of Californio »| Plateau, north-west of Rheims, after lively fighting, during which the enemy suffered serious losses. A lively artillery duel is proceeding on the Cerny-Hurtebise front.
