The report on other operations on the British front states: The enemy early last night made an attack east of Arleux, three miles east of Vimy, and south of the Souchez River. He was repulsed in each case by artillery and machine-gun fire. Of the latter front another I attempt later, assisted by liquid fire, was again driven off. East -| of Ypres we carried out a successful raid. A number of prisoners ': . were taken. During the night there was considerable mutual artillery action at a number of points on the battle front. A later report from Sir Douglas Haig states : The enemy launched a third attack early this morning, using liquid fire, south of the Souchez River. After three hours' severe fighting the weight of repeated assaults compelled our outposts to withdraw from portion of the front. Our counter-attack in the afternoon recaptured the whole of the lost trenches. The enemy's losses in the three attacks were heavy, and our positions are unchanged.
