GRIM STRUGGLE ON THE SLOPES OF FRESNOY.
WHOLE REGIMENTS FIGHT IN MIDST OF GAS CLOUDS. ; Australian and N.Z. Cable- Association. : - PAKIS, May 11. The newspaper Le Journal describes a grim scene in the reciprocal gas attacks on the western slopes of Frosnoy village, north-east of Arras. Whole regiments of masked men fought in the'dead of night ,in the midst of black vapours, making the .moonlight fantastic.., Extraordinary hand-to-hand encounters were fought. The combatants i ; r discarded their arms and,flew at! each other's throats in their efforts :■'.'■,; to tear away the masks. Few prisoners were taken and fewer still [r;'l were only wounded, .
