In support of his appeal, John Hugh t Woods, larmer, of Ohaeawoi, stated that ! one of his brothers had died from sickness - contracted in the military camp, one had . been killed at Sari Bair, and the only , other eligible brother was in camp. The , appellant was working the farm and looki ing after his aged parents. If his brother 3 come back during the war fit to work he . would immediately take his place in the , forco. Tho case was adjourned sine die, . on the understanding that if the brother , comes back it should be reported to the I board. John B. Moffatt, bank manager, of . Ohaeawai, appealed, on behalf of the bank, . for six weeks exemption, in order to close iup the bank's business at the branch. . Exemption was granted till March 15. , Stanley F. Dunning, sheep and cattle , farmer, of Awarua, desired exemption, as . it would mean serious loss to those who . had financial interests in his farm if he . were compelled to enlist. He could not , get a manager. Personally, he was eager j to go, but in appealing, he was consider- , ing his parents,, who had put the bulk of . their savings in his holding. , The chairman said the board was not j disposed to deal with this appeal at prei sent, and would adjourn it until May 15. J In the meantime the appellant must endeavour to arrange his affairs. Several appeals were held over. The board will leave Kaikohe tomorrow, and will open its sitting at Rawene oa Friday. NOVEL WELLINGTON APPEAL. RECRUITING ANOMALY.. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PKKSS ASSOCIATION.] ' WELLINGTON, Wednesday. ' The third Wellington Military Service , Board to-day heard the appeals of George ' and James Dennis, against their calling ■ up undor section 35 of the Military Service ; Act. It was shown that George' Dennis , had been serving at the forfs throughout the war, and although ho wanted to enlist i the authorities had declined to allow any 1 garrison men to volunteer. The board , dismissed the appeal, but the chairman i expressed the opinion that the appellant should' not have been called up under , section 35, in view of the Minister's statement that garrison men were prohibited ; from voluntary enlistment. A farm labourer, named Charles Had- : don, was granted exemption until April a). Questions 'regarding the recent decision of tho third Wellington Military Service Board to granting exemption in the case of marine engineers, for whom the Union Steam Ship Company appealed, until March 2, were raised by Mr. W. A. Kennedy, Wellington manager of the Union Company, before the board this afternoon. He stated that an engineer on a ship about to leave New Zealand was anxious to know how he stood. I The Chairman (Mr. W. H. S. Moorhouse) "It is absolutely definite that we shall inquire very fully into the position again on that date. In the meantime you had better make arrangements for his transfer." , Mr. Kennedy said he could transfer him, j but the company had not an engineer in Wellington to replace him. " But he could be transferred to a coastal run," said fche military representative. , .'"."= v.! Mr. Kennedy said his company would do that if it was found to be absolutely I necessarv. • He had been in- comi munication with other centres, but | had not secured a man to replace the engineer in question. The superintending engineer, in a telegram, stated that owing to the shortage of labour he viewed the position with grave concern. The Chairman : Well, we will leave it until March 2. The position may be altered by then.
