BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH.
»■. Tn? Birkenhead Borough Council met last night, Present—The Mayor, Mr. J. P McPhail; Messrß. C. B. Campbell, J, Leonard, A. Hadfleld, F. J. Stewart, E, G, Skeates, C. Mason, and R. Webb. The Minister for Defence wrote regretting- that he could not accede to the council's request for a copy of the petition signed by 'Birkvale residents relative to the release of a German reservist. Messrs. >E. C. Walton (president), T. M. Shepherd (secretary),, and P. , Utting waited upon the council as a deputation from the BirkdM./ Fruitgrowers' Association and requested that immediate attention be given to s the-footpaths of Birkdale; that portions of the pirkdalo Road be metalled, and so provide a continuous metalled road, from the Birkdale Wharf to the Birkenhead Wharf; also that the minimum water charge be reduced to '£$.• The Mayor, on behalf of the council, undertook that the footpaths would be attended to forthwith. It was also the intention of the council, as funds permitted,' to link up the unmetalled portions of the road. He could bold out no hope of. a reduction in water charges. The waterworks engineer reported that the water used for the January month was : 860,000 gallons. >\
