FIFTY YEARS AGO.

— » BANKING AND TRADE. PROGRESS OF THE COLONY. (From the HERALD of November 1. 1866.) Tub population of Auckland Province in 1861 was 24.420. It is now 49,065. The population of New Zealand in 1861 was 99.021. In 1862 it was 190,607. The exports in 1861 were £1,370,247. In 1865 they were £3,713,218. The imports in 1861 were £2,943,811. In 1865 they were £5,594,977. The history and progress of the Bank of New Zealand, just five yoars old, is a very convincing proof of the energy, business habits, prudence, and tact of those who established it. and have had the management of it. The great and marvellous success, indeed, of this institution in a colony sparsely populated, and not many years ago without any European settlement's in it, is a most convincing proof cf energy and prudence. The paidup capital at the end of the bank's first year was 79,468. It is now £500,000. These figures will give some idea of oar progress in banking and in trade during the Bhort period of five years.
