FURTHER FRENCH PROGRESS ON THE SOMME FRONT
CAPTURE OF A SYSTEM OF ENEMY TRENCHES.
VIOLENT COUNTER-ATTACKS NORTH OF LA MAISONETTE.
High Commissioner's Cable.
LONDO:* Oct. 30.
A French official message states : "Northwards of the Somnie we took a system of enemy trenches north-west of Sailly-Saillisel. Another operation enabled us to progress eastwards of Saillisel. South of the Somme the Germans during the night made repeated attacks, preceded by an intense bombardment, from Biaches as far south as La 'Maisonette. After several attacks had been repulsed, an extremely violent one enabled the enemy to penetrate a portion of our first line north of La Maisonette."
A later communique states: "The artillery struggle continues in the La Maisonette region. Bad weather still hampers operations generally."
