TOTAL COST OF THE WORK.

ESTIMATED SAVING OF £25,000.

At a meeting of the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board last night, the annual report stated that the board was em powered to borrow not exceeding £500,000. i The amount already raised is £450,000. Thus, further sum of £50,000 may be borrowed. but it is estimated that only onehalf of that sum will be required to finance the scheme to completion.

The Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, prosided, and there were also present Messrs. A. J. Entrican, H. Frost. (_}. H. Murray, T. Dignan, Hall Skelton, P. M- McElwain, J. Burton, and W. J. Holdsworth.

The annual report, which was submitted by Mr. xi. H. Watkins, engineer and secretary, gave an exhaustive account of the year's work and .of the various negotiations, entered into. The capital value of the district was shown to be £26,597,812, the amount assessed £19,240, and the amount collected £19,213. Operations at the main outfall works at Orakei hate proceeded satisfactorily. The average daily discharge during dry-wea-ther flow was 3,750.000 gallons, while as great a quantity as 57,500,000 gallons was discharged during the 24 hours ending midnight on November 22, 1915. Tho ventilation shaft at the sea-end of the storage tanks has given less cause for complaint this year. Patent disinfecting blocks were placed in the shaft during the mmmer months, and, proving a satisfactory deordorant, further experiments in this direction are warranted.

The actual expenditure for the year in the general account was £22,029, and in trust account £17,079, making a total of £39,108. The various items are set forth in detail. The principal works remaining to be done,on March 31 to complete the scheme will cost £35,900.

A letter was read from the Epsom Road Board submitting details of a ventilating shaft and pipe trap to be constructed at the board's manhole near Morrow Street, at the road board's expense. A letter was read from the Mount Eden town clerk statins that lie had been instructed to urge tile board to construct a fewer from the main sewer at Meola Creek to the borough boundary as soon as possible.
