LABOUR DEPARTMENT.
APPLICATIONS FOR WORK.
LOWEST NUMBER ON RECORD
[ill TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.]
Wellington, Wednesday. Destite the war, the past year, from the point of view of the Labour Department, was a record one. There were fewer applicants for work than during any other period in the Department's history. In many cases weeks elapsed in some of the larger secondary towns without a bona-fide application being recorded. All applicants were readily assisted to either Government or private work- Tradesmen arc reported to hare had an exceptional year. An unusual feature of tho.year was the growing employment of girls in place of men, notably in banks, because of vacancies caused by enlistments. In connection with tho cereal crops a shortage of labour was cxpectcd, and special preparations were made, but contrary to expectations the farmers themselves had little difficulty in obtaining necessary assistance on the spot.
