INFANTILE PARALYSIS.

♦ . FALLING OFF IN CASES. FIVE PATIENTS IN NINE DAYS. During the Easter holidays only five new cases of infantile paralysis have occurred in tho Auckland Province, all of them coming from country districts. Tho last notifications prior to the holidays were received on Monday, April 17. During the threo succeeding days up to Thursday no new cases were reported. The public health office closed on tho Thursday night, and during tho intervening period between that time and the. re-opening of tho office yesterday morning, five cases wero notified. The total number of cases now stands at 487, including 311 in tho country centres and 176 in the city and suburbs. The last .notification of a caso of the disease in the city was on April 6. Prior to that date there was a period of immunity of 12 clear days. This is regarded as indicating that the disease has almost completely declined in the city and urban areas, although a sporadic case or two may still be expected to occur. No additional deaths have occurred during tho holidays, tho total Hill standing at 49, comprising 16 in the city and suburbs and 33 in the country. CASES IN THE SOUTH ISLAND. SIX • RECENTLY REPORTED. Cases of infantile paralysis just reported at Christchurch include four in North Canterbury— a woman aged 34 and three little girls—a boy aged 3$ in South Canterbury, and a boy of the same age on the West Ctiast.
