SCULLING.
NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. PAYMENT OF FINAL DEPOSITS. [BT TXLEGRAPH. — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WxxGAxn, Friday. Final deposits of £100 per man were out up to-day for the Webb - Hannan sculling race, to be rowed on Friday. September 24. for £200 a-side and the championship of New Zealand. D .Hailfield. of Auckland, who holds the amateur sculling championship of New Zealand, is likely to go to Wanganui and row against A. Sharp, a " curtain-raiser'" to the Webb-Hannan match. The New Zealand Council has been asked to grant permission for the match, which is being arranged in order 10 give Sharp a final opportunity to defeat the New Zealand champion before departure for the front. Nothing, however, is being done to jeopardise the amateur status of Hadfield or Sharp. Should the race take place it will create much interest, for Sharp has been Hadfield's toughest opponent on several occasions, and. in fact, many West Coasters are of the opinion that Sharp was unlucky not to win the title on at least one occasion.
