SHOOTING "WILD CATTLE."
"NEW CHUM'S" CURIOUS MISTAKE.
fBT TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT-! New Plymouth, Friday. A man was indicted at the New Plymouth Supreme Court for having shot a cow belonging to one Julian, of Rahotu, and used a portion of the carcase. The defence was that prisoner, a "new chum," had gone out for a day's wild cattle shooting, and shot the animal as a wild one. It was also admitted that in pursuance of this idea he had skinned the beast, ■ and had taken its tongue. The jury, after deliberation, returned to Court, and the foreman announced that a verdict of guilty had been arrived at, but that the jury was of opinion that at the time of shooting the cow accused honestly believed it to be a wild cow, and that he was justified in his action. His Honor: I cannot call that a verdict of guilty. The Foreman: That is the verdict of the jury. Your Honor. His Honor: That, then, is a verdict of not guilty. Accused was accordingly discharged.
