ILL-TREATING COWS.

DUNEDIN GIRL CONVICTED. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION. j Dttnedin, Friday. In Port Chalmers Police Court to-day, i a woman named Emily Duck-Manton and a girl, aged 15 years, were charged with cruelly ill-treating two cows, the property of Kate Beatrice E. Johnstone, .by applying some blistering preparation to their teats. A plea of not gtultv was entered. Evidence for the prosecution showed that complainant, who resides at Portobello, and whose husband 'is at the j Dardanelles, had given Mrs. Duck-Man-ton permission to drive cows through her paddock, but withdrew the / privilege owing to it being abased. - On August 19 complainant found the teats of her cows blistered by some irritant which caused them severe suffering and • seriously affected their value. The girl accused admitted putting some ointment on the cows' teats for fun at the instigation of the older accused, but Mrs. Duck-Manton denied having taken any part in the incident. The case against Mrs. DuckManton was dismissed, but the girl was convicted, and remanded till Thursday for sentence. * ~ •" '-';
