NEW PHASE OF THE BATTLE OF THE NORTH.
GERMANS VIOLENTLY ATTACKING NEAR SOUCHEZ. OPPOSING TROOPS FIGHT WITH STAKES FROM TRENCHES. (Received July 7. 9.15 p.m.) Paris, July 7. The fighting north of Arras has assumed a new character. The Germans have commenced a series of violent attacks against the two extremities of the semi-circles forming around Souchezthat is, against the French advance post thrown out in front of Lorette Hill and against the Cabaret Rouge. Ferocious infantry fighting has taken place on the Angres road, both sides using stakes from the trenches when their bayonets were broken and their cartridges expended. The Germans prevented the threatened occupation of SouchezThe German bombardment of East Amiens was not accompanied by infantry attacks, though it was intended to foreshadow violent attacks by massed troops.
