GERMANS CAUGHT IN CURTAIN OF SHRAPNEL.
ATTACK ON HEUSE DRIVEN BACK IN DISORDER. BRITISH REPULSE COUNTER-ATTACKS EAST OF YPRES. (Received July 7. 8.5 p.m.) Paeis, July 7. An official communique states: "The British repulsed several counter-attacks south-west of Pilken, east of Ypres, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. "The Germans bombarded Arras with incendiary shells, firing especially at the cathedral. We recaptured a section of the Nouvaux trench. " On the heights of the Meusc the enemy counter-attacked, but were caught by machine-guns and by curtains of shrapnel, and retired in disorder, with heavy losses."
