GERMANS TO MAKE ANOTHER BID FOR CALAIS.
PREPARATIONS FOR OFFENSIVE IN WEST. GREAT FORCES BEING TRANSFERRED FROM EAST. Wellington, July 7. The High Commissioner reports from London on July 7 : " Unofficial reports from the Continent indicate that great German forces are being transferred from the eastern to the western front, suggesting a further attack in the direction of Calais." DEFENSIVE IN ALSACE TO LIBERATE TROOPS. FORTIFICATIONS BUILT BETWEEN VOSGES AND RHINE. Times and Sydney Sun Services. (Received July 7, 5.5 p.m.) '*• London, July 6. It is reported in Paris that the Germans arc constructing immense defensive works in Upper Alsace. They are apparently designed to render the positions practically impregnable, thus liberating troops for an offensive elsewhere. New heavy guns have been brought to Altkirch and Hairzbach. An Akatian declares that the Germans have a second line of fortifications midway between the Vosges and the Rhine, running the entire length of Alsace, which is defended by 250,000 Landsturni troops. The Matin believes that the closing of the Swiss frontier and the rushing-up of fresh German troops to Belgium heralds another attempt, to capture Calais and to bombard Dover with long-range guns in order to send troops in aluminium boats to invade England. A series of attacks has been made recently by the Germans upon the allied front, apparently without any particular object. These efforts are interpreted as preparation for a new and more severe offensive. The Amsterdam Tplegraaf states that immense German reinforcements are expected from the eastern front. Officers in Brussels declare that Calais will be taken at all costs. The Germans are erecting numerous wooden barracks, suitable for hospitals, preparatory to a fresh effort to capture the Channel coast.
